ERZURUM (AA) – YUNUS HOCAOĞLU – Erzurum, which is shown as the shining star of Turkey in summer and winter sports organizations and was declared both tourism and the “European Winter Sports Capital” in 2025, is preparing to make its name known more in the world.
Having hosted many international winter and summer sports organizations to date, Erzurum continues to be a sports center, especially with the investments made in the last 13 years.
Erzurum, which attracts the attention of athletes in many areas throughout the year due to its climate, is especially appreciated for the facilities that started with the 2011 World Universiade Winter Games.
The city has diving towers, ice skating, ice hockey, curling halls, as well as Europe’s only Olympic swimming pool at an altitude of 1800 meters in the city center, and is in an important position in the international arena with dozens of sports facilities.

Çakmur stated that many facilities in the city are not available in any other province in Turkey and said, “As a reflection of this, national teams and clubs were formed in Erzurum. National teams are currently flying Turkey’s flag abroad in short track and curling. We have started the formation of infrastructure in ice hockey. This year, we are increasing the number of our clubs and athletes in this field. We have undertaken the infrastructure burden of ice hockey. We have voluntarily taken on responsibility in Erzurum and have made all kinds of plans to advance our city’s youth and clubs in ice hockey.”
Çakmur, who stated that athletes prefer the city due to its high altitude, continued as follows:
“Our national teams prefer this place for winter sports within the scope of high altitude training. The reflection of these facilities was as follows. Erzurum was declared the Winter Sports Capital.The recognition will be in Europe and all over the world. Erzurum will be remembered with winter sports. In winter, we included snowboarding and alpine skiing in the system of the International Ski Federation under the name of the children’s cup. It will be held in Erzurum for the first time in 2025.
