Why UNESCO is Visiting Turkey This Year…

Why was Turkey’s rich cultural heritage ignored by UNESCO this year? Türkiye, which manages to enter the list with an average of one work every year, was not included in the list this time. Tourism professional Recep Yavuz evaluates the situation and questions UNESCO’s selection criteria. Why Did UNESCO Skip Turkey This Year?

Here is that article by Recep Yavuz…

“I’m trying to understand why. While Türkiye has the richness of being among the top 10 countries on the UNESCO Heritage List, why is one year being made like one year? In the 10 years since 2014, 10 of our cultural riches have been included in the UNESCO world heritage. On average, only one cultural asset per year can be included in the list. We have 79 candidates, 79 years are required.

UNESCO Brand: Symbol of Success of Countries That Stand Out in Cultural Tourism

One of the most important elements of Cultural Tourism is the UNESCO brand. Countries that stand out in Cultural Tourism try to promote their cultural assets by strengthening them with this brand, and they are effective in this. In catalogs prepared in this direction, the UNESCO symbol always takes its place in the front corner.

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee meets every year in mid-summer, examines the nomination applications, makes its decision and announces the new UNESCO World Heritage sites to the public. I look forward to it with excitement every July. Because dozens of our cultural assets, which are very valuable and much more valuable than their counterparts in the world, are on the waiting list.

UNESCO’s New Heritage: 26 Artifacts from 21 Countries Added to the World Heritage List

The committee met in New Delhi, India, between 21-31 July this year and determined the new UNESCO cities. Accordingly, India, Palestine, Germany, England, Jordan, China, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, Northern Ireland, Brazil, Ethiopia, South Africa, Burkino Faso, Japan, Thailand, Russia, Kenya, Malaysia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Romania and Iran. 26 works from are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Turkey’s UNESCO Candidates: Why Were 79 Ruins Not Included in the List?

Frankly, it is incomprehensible that no ruins from Turkey, which has 79 ruins on the Candidate Heritage list (the most in the world), are included in the list. Didn’t we apply? Didn’t they choose? I don’t know, but dozens of our works that left their mark on world history have been waiting for approval for 20-30 years.

Turkey’s Pending Heritage: From Ishak Pasha to Lycia When Will UNESCO Candidates Receive Approval?

Let me list some of them; İshak Pasha Palace, Ahlat Tombstones, Sumela Monastery, Perge, Zeugma, Aspendos Theatre, Yivli Minaret, Assos, Bodrum Castle, Kızılırmak Delta, Zeynel Abidin Mosque, Mor Gabriel church, Kaunos, Salt Lake Basin, Sart and Thousand Hills, Lycia Ancient These rare cities, which hold an important place in World Culture, have been waiting on the candidate list for years. How long will they wait?

Why Wasn’t Türkiye In The UNESCO List This Year After Last Year’s Success?

Last year, our two cultural assets, Gordion and Wooden Mosques, were included in the list, and this actually gave us hope for our other waiting cities. Unfortunately, UNESCO bypassed Turkey this year. However, Türkiye has works that deserve UNESCO Heritage at least as much as other countries.

UNESCO World Heritage List: Türkiye Leaves Behind Other Countries with 21 Artifacts

There are 1272 works on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Spain has 50, Italy has 60, Germany has 54, Greece has 19, China has 59, and Mexico has 35. 21 works from Turkey have been included in the World Heritage list so far.

UNESCO’s Unfair Elections: Europe’s Priority and Turkey’s Ignoring

I think UNESCO does not treat all countries equally and fairly. When we examine the list, we see that European countries are at the forefront. For example, the fact that Germany has 2.5 times more UNESCO Heritage sites than Turkey cannot be explained neither historically nor visually. While there were signs of life in the Karain Cave, which was on the candidate list in 1994, there was no place called Germany or Europe. I know the selection criteria, I have read them. However, when we look at the places chosen, it is obvious that it contradicts itself.

Turkish Works on UNESCO’s Waiting List: We Are Waiting for a Fair Decision

I hope that the UNESCO Committee will act more fairly and declare the rare works, which we applied for years ago, as World Heritage as soon as possible, without being kept waiting any longer. I don’t know what can be done about this. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism is also following this issue. .Perhaps it would be best to withdraw our works from the candidate list, they will not be accepted anyway, so that our legacy can be left to us…”
