Record Tourist Influx in Safranbolu and Amasra: Safranbolu, Karabük’s Pearl on the UNESCO List, Broke a Record with 3 Million Visitors, and Bartın’s Attraction Center Amasra Broke a Record with 2.5 Million Visitors.

BARTIN/KARABÜK (AA) – SELİM BOSTANCI – ORHAN KUZU – Safranbolu district of Karabük, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and Amasra district of Bartın, famous for its natural beauties and culinary culture, had a fruitful year in tourism.

Amasra, where many artifacts from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Genoese, Seljuk and Ottoman periods are located, is a frequent destination for local and foreign tourists in every season with its virgin bays, clean beaches, slightly wavy sea and beauties integrated with nature.

The district, which is among the important tourism areas and was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Temporary List in 2013 with Amasra Castle, attracts attention with its churches and bazaars, as well as works reflecting thousands of years of heritage exhibited in the Amasra Museum.

In the district, where it is difficult to meet the accommodation demand during the summer months and weekends, as well as during holidays, the number of visitors, which was 600 thousand in 2013, exceeded 2.5 million in 2024.

400 thousand of the visitors were those with accommodation, 30 thousand were those arriving by cruise ships, and the remaining part was day trippers determined according to vehicle entry and exit data.

– “Tourists’ interest in Amasra is increasing day by day”

Amasra Culture and Tourism Association President Hüseyin Boran told the AA correspondent that the district is one of the most important tourism centers of the region with its historical and natural beauties and culinary culture.

Stating that last year was very productive in terms of tourism in Amasra, which is among the important touristic areas of the Black Sea, Boran noted that the district’s population, which was 6 thousand, increased to 60 thousand, especially in the summer months.

Boran stated that more than 2 million 500 thousand tourists came to Amasra last year and said, “The completion of the Amasra Port Project and the provision of services to yachts and large cruise ships and the fact that tourists have started to come to the district from the sea also contributes to the tourism of the region. We hosted approximately 30 thousand visitors on cruise ships. Thanks to this international tourism, the number and quality of visitors to both Amasra and the region are increasing. “In addition to its historical monuments, the interest of local and foreign tourists in Amasra, with its nature that integrates every shade of green with the blue of the sea, is increasing day by day.” he said.

– Safranbolu took its visitors on a journey of history

Approximately 3 million local and foreign tourists, day trippers and accommodation, visited the tourism town of Safranbolu in 2024.

The district, which is called the “fingerprint of the Ottoman Empire” because it reflects Ottoman architecture, city life and culture, attracts the attention of local and foreign visitors every period.

The district, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, has inns, baths, mosques, fountains and bridges that have survived from the Ottoman period to the present day, as well as 18-20th century buildings. It hosts mansions built in the centuries.

The district, which is an “open-air museum”, literally took its visitors on a journey of history with its cultural heritage.

– “I hope the numbers will exceed this in 2025”

Safranbolu Tourism Operators Association President Şebnem Urgancıoğlu said that the total number of visitors staying in the district increased by 20 percent last year compared to 2023.

Stating that the number of visitors, including day trippers, approached 3 million last year, Urgancıoğlu continued as follows:

“I hope that the figures will exceed this in 2025. I hope the numbers will be high, especially in the foreign market. Our targets are increasing every year as a country. It is pleasing that we are experiencing an increase in line with the country’s targets, especially in Safranbolu. Our goal in tourism is to increase not only quantity but also quality. 2024 was a year that was very busy in Safranbolu and was passed without any problems, even during the holidays where we broke records. The feedback we received was satisfaction with Safranbolu. “These make us happy.”

Urgancıoğlu stated that Kalealtı Primary School was transformed into a museum under the leadership of the Governorship, District Governorship and Safranbolu Culture and Tourism Foundation and said, “Recently, a museum director was appointed to our city. We believe that tourism diversity will increase in 2025. I believe that, hand in hand with our state and municipal authorities, we will have a better year in 2025 with good investments and projects for tourism. I invite those who haven’t seen it to see Safranbolu.” he said.
