Mediterranean destinations remain popular, with Germans seeking a variety of experiences in non-traditional medium and long-haul destinations, thanks to cultural attractions, value for money and new direct flights from Germany. That’s according to Mabrian travel intelligence.
Barcelona, Spain, September 12, 2024 –German travelers continue to choose Mediterranean countries for their autumn 2024 getaways, Data from Mabrian (global travel intelligence platform under The Data Appeal Company),reflects a growing interest in alternative destinations offering culture, outdoor experiences and better value. Some destinations in the Balkan Peninsula are emerging amid seasonal demand trends.
Data,German autumn 2024 travel plans are seen as reflecting a slight readjustment of strong demand in the Mediterranean and increased demand for alternative medium-haul destinations in the Caucasus and Central Asia, some Scandinavian countries and long-haul Asian and Middle Eastern destinations.
Mabrian findings,It combines inspirational travel demand data based on Mabrian’s Search Share Index with cyclical data on German autumn travel interests and motivations. Given a specific source market and time period, the Search Share Index is a percentage that correlates spontaneous searches for specific destinations with total flight searches.
For this analysis, the Search Share Index tracked flight searches in Germany made at least three months in advance for travel between September and November 2024, and Focused on the best performing destinations for the German travel market.“Unlike confirmed reservations, this rate indicates market interest in specific destinations,” says Carlos Cendra, partner, Marketing and Communications Director at Mabrian. “Confirmation of reservations depends on many factors, from available connections to flight and accommodation prices or other factors that may influence travelers’ willingness to buy or spend.”
While traditional Mediterranean destinations continue to attract many German travellers, “the growing interest in emerging destinations reflects a broader shift in travel preferences. German tourists are increasingly looking for unique, value-for-money experiences that combine cultural attractions, gastronomy and outdoor adventures,” Carlos Cendra points out.
Compared to the same period in 2023, The GermansMediterranean destinations (especially Türkiye, Spain, Italy, France or Greece) seasonal demand, while still strong, is stabilizing or decreasing slightly.Portugal and Tunisia are exceptions to this trend, with seasonal demand from Germany increasing by 5% and 52% respectively.

In the Balkans, destinations such as Serbia, Croatia (+45%), Serbia (+25%) and Albania (+73%) saw notable growth in inspirational demand from German travellers for autumn 2024. This increase is driven by the region’s appeal as a cultural hub, as well as outdoor and adventure tourism options. Mabrian’s analysis shows that demand for the Balkans is evenly distributed across Germany, particularly in regions with direct flight connections.
